WELCOME TO Mie
Mie Prefecture is located near the center of Japan, surrounded by the sea and mountains. It has a long, narrow shape stretching from north to south. It is broadly divided into the following five areas, in order from the north: Hokusei, Iga, Chusei, Nansei (Ise-Shima), and Higashikishu. The Hokusei area is known for its thriving manufacturing industry. The area’s central city, Yokkaichi, boasts one of the highest shipment volumes of industrial products among Japan’s cities. In addition, the area features various large-scale attractions, including Nagashima Spa Land in Kuwana City, as well as the Suzuka Circuit in Suzuka City, a famous Formula 1 circuit. The Iga area is a historical area that prospered as a castle town and post town, highlighted by strong geographical ties with the Kansai region. The area is well known as the birthplace of Iga-ryu ninja. The Chusei area is located in the center of Mie. Tsu City is the seat of prefectural government, while the area around Matsusaka City produces Matsusaka beef, a high-end beef brand. The Nansei area features Ise-jingu Shrine, which attracts visitors from all across Japan, and the 42nd G7 Summit (Ise-Shima Summit) was held in Shima City in 2016. The Higashikishu area is home to Kumano Kodo, a popular tourist destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as Maruyama Senmaida , one of the most extensive rice terraces in Japan.
