WELCOME TO Kyoto
Kyoto was Japan’s capital for 1,200 years and is a city rich in culture and history. Many famous temples and shrines attract over 50 million tourists annually. In particular, Kyoto is renowned for its breathtaking cherry blossoms in April and stunning autumn foliage in November.

Many of you may be familiar with Pokémon and Super Mario Bros. These iconic characters were born in Kyoto. The games in which they appear were created by Nintendo, a company that originated in Kyoto.
Nintendo was originally a small company that began manufacturing hanafuda, a traditional Japanese card game, in 1889. It was also the first company in Japan to produce Western-style playing cards. The fact that such a historic company became a pioneer in the video game industry exemplifies Kyoto’s unique characteristic—preserving history and tradition while embracing new changes.
