WELCOME TO Shimane
Location
Shimane Prefecture is situated in the south-west of Honshu, Japan's largest island, bordering with Tottori Prefecture to the east, Yamaguchi Prefecture to the west and Hiroshima Prefecture to the south, and facing onto the Japan Sea to the north. Between 40 and 80 kilometers north of the Shimane coastline are the Oki Islands and further afield are the Korean Peninsular and the Russian Primorsky Territory.
Due to its geographical proximity with China and the Korean Peninsular, Shimane once played an important role as a conduit with those countries in the formation of the ancient Japanese state.
Local delicacies
Shimane has an abundance of delicacies including rice, beef, grapes, melons and persimmons, seafood hauled fresh from the Japan Sea, processed marine products, rice wine and Japanese sweets.
Also, as part of the prefecture’s scheme to promote local products emphasis has been placed on five products including Oki Oysters and Shimane Beef.

Manufacturing in Shimane is driven primarily by indigenous industries (the production of machinery, metal, clay tiles and processed marine products) and the promotion of precision machinery industries. 2001 saw the opening of the first research industry park in Shimane. "Shimane Research Business Park" is the construction of a general support system promoting creative regional enterprise and research facilities for IT and software.
