WELCOME TO Hiroshima

Hiroshima Prefecture is located near the center of the Chugoku region, which occupies the western corner of Honshu, the largest island in the Japanese Archipelago.
The prefecture’s population is approximately 2.71 million as of February 2025, including 65,000 foreign residents. The number of foreign residents has been increasing in recent years.

Hiroshima City is the seat of the prefectural government with a population of approximately 1.18 million and the largest ordinance-designated city in the Chugoku region.
Owing to its diverse natural environment, climate, industry, and urban functions, Hiroshima Prefecture is sometimes called “a Japan in miniature.”

The prefecture’s main industry is manufacturing, centered on shipbuilding, steel, and automobiles. It also boasts a thriving commercial sector, serving as a home to branches of numerous large corporations. Furthermore, thanks to the rich natural environment highlighted by the Setouchi Sea and Chugoku Mountains, the prefecture has a thriving agricultural and fishing industry.

In addition to these economic features, Hiroshima Prefecture is a popular tourist destination.

Both Itsukushima Shrine  and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial (known as the Genbaku Dome)  were inscribed as World Heritage Sites in 1996.
The prefecture’s two major gourmet specialties are okonomiyaki and oysters, along with various others such as Onomichi Ramen, conger eel rice, Setouchi lemons, and Momiji manju.

If you are a sake aficionado, Saijo (Higashihiroshima City), counted among Japan’s three major sake production areas, is another spot you cannot miss.

Last but not least, Hiroshima has a thriving sports culture, highlighted by the numerous professional sports teams based in the prefecture, including Hiroshima Toyo Carp (baseball), Sanfrecce Hiroshima (soccer), Hiroshima Dragonflies (basketball), and Hiroshima Thunders (volleyball).
