WELCOME TO Kochi

Kochi Prefecture is a land of lush forests and blue seas.

This blessed natural environment is in harmony with the surrounding area, creating a rich and diverse climate.

To the north, it borders Ehime Prefecture and Tokushima Prefecture via the Shikoku Mountains, and to the south, it juts out like a fan facing the Pacific Ocean.

With an area of approximately 7,104 square kilometers, it is the largest of the four prefectures in Shikoku and the 18th largest in Japan, of which approximately 84% is forest land.

In contrast, the total population is 691,527 (2020 census), ranking 45th in the country, and the population density is very low at 97.3 people per square kilometer.

Due to the warm and humid climate, subtropical plants such as the Chinese laurel tree and the Japanese palm grow naturally at Cape Ashizuri and Cape Muroto, and early-season rice is harvested on the Kochi Plain.

The prefecture has also been known as a horticultural kingdom, with greenhouse cultivation of vegetables having been practiced here since ancient times.

Tosa has a long coastline facing the Pacific Ocean, with a ria coastline in the west and a raised coastline with flat sandy beaches in the east. This complex topography, warm climate, and natural features such as frequent typhoons have created a unique climate in Tosa.
