WELCOME TO Oita

A passage from the Nihon Shoki about Emperor Keiko’s visit to Kyushu reads as follows: “Winter, 10th month. He arrived in the Land of Ohokida. Since this region is wide and beautiful, it was called Ohokida.”
The
Bungo Province Fudoki reports the words of Emperor Keiko, “As this county is broad and large, it shall be named Ohokida,” and goes on to note that “Ohokida” was later written as “Oita.” (This is one among various other theories.)

Features of Oita Prefecture

Oita Prefecture is located in the northeastern part of the Kyushu region. It boasts the highest number of hot spring sources and hot spring water volume in Japan. These include nationally famous hot spring resorts such as Beppu Onsen and Yufuin Onsen. Oita’s climate varies significantly depending on the area. For instance, the central area along the Beppu Bay is characterized by a relatively mild climate, while the inland area to the west typically experiences more rainfall during the summer.

Usa Jingu is widely known as the head shrine of over 40,000 branch Hachiman shrines across Japan, attracting many visitors every year.
